Border Report – Border Report Live: Deportation planes of unaccompanied migrant children halted

Posted on September 2, 2025

HARLINGEN, Texas (Border Report) — Planes full of unaccompanied migrant children who were being deported by the Trump administration back to Guatemala were stopped Sunday in this South Texas border city.

A federal judge in Washington, D.C., blocked the Trump administration from sending any unaccompanied migrant child to Guatemala unless they have a deportation order. U.S. District Judge Sparkle Sooknanan issued the order as planes with nearly 100 children were sitting on the tarmac ready for take off from Valley International Airport.

In the latest episode of Border Report Live, KXAN host Daniel Marin talks with South Texas correspondent Sandra Sanchez about deportation flights from South Texas and the secretive Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), which is part of the Department of Health and Human Services and oversees children who cross the U.S. border without an adult.

The halting of planes comes as the Associated Press reports ORR has issued a new policy requiring parents and legal guardians to come in person to claim unaccompanied migrant children and they could be subject to interviews by immigration officials.
