KTSM News – Charges dropped in 2024 El Paso teen death case

Posted on September 4, 2025

Charges against Oscar Solis, initially accused of intoxication manslaughter in the death of 17-year-old Miguel Romero, were dropped earlier this year, leaving questions unanswered.

The charges stemmed from a February 2024 incident where Solis was accused of hitting Romero with his vehicle in Horizon and fleeing the scene. Despite the initial charges, the district attorney’s office has not clarified why the case was dismissed.

District Attorney James Montoya is expected to hold a press conference and address the case publicly.

Witnesses reported that Solis was driving on Pawling Drive and turned onto Darrington Road when he struck Romero, who was crossing the street. Solis allegedly fled the scene and was later arrested at his home.

Court records indicate that Solis’s wife admitted he had been drinking with friends prior to the incident. Despite this, the charges were dismissed in April 2024.

Public records reveal that Solis has prior convictions for driving while intoxicated in 2003 and 2021, raising concerns about his history of offenses.

Thursday’s afternoon news conference by El Paso District Attorney James Montoya may shed light on the case’s current status and the reasons behind the dismissal of charges against Solis.
