EL PASO, Texas (Border Report) — The president of Mexico says what happened in the waters off Venezuela won’t happen in her country.
When asked Thursday morning about the deadly U.S. military attack on a boat accused of carrying drugs, President Claudia Sheinbaum dismissed the notion that the U.S. would carry out a similar attack on Mexican soil.
President Trump this week justified Tuesday’s attack, which he said targeted the Tren De Aragua gang and which left 11 dead. The U.S. has not identified those killed or confirmed whether they were actual members of the Venezuelan prison gang, or how much contraband was on the boat.
In this episode of Border Report Live, host Daniel Marin and correspondents Julian Resendiz and Salvador Rivera discuss why Mexico’s relationship with the U.S. will be key. Mexico is one of America’s biggest trading partners, and the two have teamed up to combat the flow of fentanyl and migration north.
But both countries have been at odds in recent weeks over Trump’s secret directive to the Pentagon to use military force against drug cartels in Latin America. Shenbaum insists that any agreement with the U.S. will “never” include U.S. boots on the ground.
