Ysleta Independent School District Trustee Kathryn Lucero will be leaving the board next week to move out of state, having served for over eight years.
“An unexpected opportunity in Maine has presented itself, and after much reflection, I have decided to take this next step in my journey,” Lucero said in a statement to El Paso Matters.
“Leaving El Paso and this role is not easy. YISD will always hold a special place in my heart, and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve. It has truly been an honor,” she added.
The YISD school board is scheduled to meet Wednesday, Sept. 10 to accept Lucero’s resignation, effective Sept. 11.
The board will also need to decide whether to appoint a replacement for Lucero, who represents the Del Valle High School feeder pattern, or call for a special election.
Lucero was elected to the YISD board in May 2017. She ran unopposed in May 2021 and 2025, allowing her to keep her seat on the seven-member board after the district canceled the elections due to a lack of challengers. Her term was to expire in 2029.
She submitted her letter of resignation to the board on Aug. 28, stating that she had “the privilege of working alongside dedicated colleagues, visionary leaders, and a community deeply committed to excellence in education.”
Lucero most recently served as the colonia program director for Dig Deep, a nonprofit that aims to bring running water to impoverished communities in the United States. Lucero said she did not agree with Dig Deep’s methods and wanted to pursue better opportunities to help bring water to communities in need.
