Border Report – Coast Guard has a fitness test. Would you pass it?

Posted on September 7, 2025

(NewsNation) — The Coast Guard is mandating a fitness test for all members, and there have been a few changes.

By the end of the year, all Coast Guard members must undergo a physical fitness assessment, which will be used to determine future policies surrounding the fitness test.

The mandated fitness test involves push-ups, a plank hold, a 1.5-mile run, a 12-minute swim and a 2000-meter row.

Standards vary across genders and age groups. The highest benchmark across each category is as follows:

  • Push-Ups: 29
  • Planks: 1 min 18 seconds
  • 1.5-mile run: 12 minutes 29 seconds
  • 12-minute swim: 500 meters
  • 2000-meter row: 9 minutes, 20 seconds

Planks have replaced sit-ups, and either the row, swim or run can be selected as the cardio element.

“Readiness starts with the physical and mental readiness of every Coast Guard man and woman,” Adm. Kevin Lunday, the acting commandant and Master Chief Phil Waldron said, via an email to the workforce.

“On that cornerstone we build the readiness of the crew, the unit, and the force.”
