EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Twenty-five dogs were rescued from a Northeast El Paso property that was described as unsanitary and two people were arrested on animal cruelty charges, El Paso Police said.
One of those dogs ended up dying.
On Sept. 5, Shannon Marie Hayes Inks, 39, and Wayne John Douglas Hayes, 44, were arrested and were each charged with two counts of cruelty to non-livestock animals.
The Police Department’s Animal Cruelty Investigations Unit recently looked into reports about a property on the 10400 block of Dunlap. Community members had reported the property because of its condition and concerns over the welfare of animals there.
Officials found unsanitary conditions and substandard housing for multiple dogs, El Paso Police said.
During a follow-up inspection, conditions had worsened, police said.
Due to the severity of the situation, a court order was obtained to allow Animal Services to fully assess the property.
As a result, 25 dogs were removed from the property and taken to the El Paso Animal Shelter for evaluation and care.
Veterinary staff provided care to the rescued animals, several with urgent health conditions, police said.
One dog ended up dying despite emergency care.
The remaining animals received treatment and will continue to be monitored to ensure their recovery.
Both suspects were booked under $20,000 bonds.
