Border Report – City of Tijuana acquires 129 new trash trucks, adds 300 service routes

Posted on September 11, 2025

SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — Tijuana Mayor Ismael Burgueño Ruiz on Wednesday announced the acquisition of 129 new trash trucks that will be put into service immediately.

Burgueño Ruiz says the additional rigs will help collect trash along 300 new routes servicing almost 85,000 homes throughout Tijuana.

“This is a historic day in which the municipal government that I lead, is transforming, in a substantial manner, the dynamic of trash collection,” he said. “This will help us cover 98 percent of the city, up from 67 percent.”

The mayor told reporters Wednesday afternoon, the new trucks were in response to residents, including some who rely on private trash collection for a fee, constantly asking for better service.

“This will allow people to forgo this extra expense and can now count on a fortified service from the city — this is part of an initiative from President Claudia Sheinbaum to force local governments to guarantee quality public services.”

The additional trucks and routes will require 216 new hires to support the expanded service.

The city has invested more than $38 million to purchase the new vehicles and on the additional work force.
