EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The 63-year-old man who was killed earlier this week was found by his caretaker with his hands bound in front of him by an electrical cord, and stab wounds on his neck, according to court documents obtained by KTSM.
As KTSM previously reported, Alejandra Ramirez, 27, was arrested and charged with the murder of Jorge Serna, 63, on Wednesday, Sept. 17, according to jail records.
This comes after around 8 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 15, El Paso Police Department (EPPD) officers responded to the 1900 block of Olive Avenue about an “unresponsive subject.”
Upon arrival, officers met with Serna’s caretaker, who had arrived in the morning to check on him. She said that as soon as she entered the apartment, she observed that Serna was “completely naked, lying on the ground in a pool of blood,” according to court documents.
Officers checked on Serna and observed that his hands were bound in front of him by an electrical cord, and there were suspected stab wounds on his neck. Outside of the apartment, officers also observed footprints left in blood, which were leading away from the front door for around 10 to 15 feet, according to court documents.
The El Paso Fire Department’s Medical Services conducted a check on Serna and stated that he did not have any signs of life. The scene was secured, and EPPD’s Crimes Against Persons unit was called out to continue the investigation.
After investigators conducted a canvass of the area, they located a surveillance camera at a nearby residence that captured a female suspect exiting Serna’s apartment at around 7:21 a.m. on Monday.
The female suspect, later identified as Ramirez, could be seen running from the area carrying a knife in her hands. Her path followed the direction and location of the footprints left in blood. She was also described as Hispanic with medium build, wavy hair, and a distinct tattoo on her left shoulder, according to court documents.
After speaking with the caretaker and additional neighbors, investigators learned that an additional man also used to stay with Serna occasionally.
The man confirmed that he had visited Serna multiple times over the weekend, and that he frequently witnessed a woman who would visit Serna’s apartment, including as recently as the weekend before the murder happened, according to court documents.
After providing Ramirez’s description, which matched the woman seen in the surveillance video, the man added that her tattoo has musical notes.
Officers showed the man a photograph of Ramirez and a screenshot of the surveillance video, and he identified her as the woman who would frequently visit Serna’s apartment, according to court documents.
Investigators then identified Ramirez’s Facebook profile through police databases and could see a photograph in which a tattoo can be seen on her left shoulder, consistent with the placement of the suspect woman fleeing Serna’s apartment in the video.
