KTSM News – Tree removal, thinning may impact traffic in Gila National Forest

Posted on September 20, 2025

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Tree removal and thinning in part of the Gila National Forest could impact traffic, officials said.

The Gila National Forest is working with a permit holder to cut and remove hazardous trees and conduct a forest thinning operation along the Frisco Divide Road (Forest Road 209). That is south of Highway 180 between Reserve and Luna in the Quemado Ranger District.

Due to tree felling activities near Forest Road 209, travelers may experience temporary delays of up to 15 minutes during operations, Gila National Forest officials said.

Tree harvest operations will occur within approximately 3 miles south of U.S. Highway 180. Operations began on Sept. 16 and may continue for about one month, depending on weather conditions. Signs are posted in the project area and road guards will be in place as needed.

Travelers on the Frisco Divide and on U.S. Highway 180 should expect truck traffic while the permittee is hauling harvested timber.

Motorists are urged to maintain awareness, slow down, and keep to the right, especially when approaching blind curves.

The removal of marked, standing dead trees along Forest Road 209 supports public safety for travelers and campers along a public road, officials said.

The permittee will also harvest designated trees affected by dwarf mistletoe or mountain pine beetle in a small harvest unit at Horse Mesa. The removal of trees affected by insect and disease infestation will help improve the health of remaining trees, officials said.
