KTSM News – Felipa’s Flix: Goodbye to Robert Redford, the old Hollywood?

Posted on September 22, 2025

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – Robert Redford passed away at the age of 89, leaving behind a legacy of Hollywood classics, impeccable performances, award-winning films, and an example of what makes a movie star.

Acclaimed film critic Felipa Solis looked back on Redford’s best work and what made him one of the most beloved actors of our time.

Felipa’s Review

He was a Movie Star! He had good looks, but talent that was unrivaled. He actually won an Oscar as Best Director for “Ordinary People,” and was nominated for three others. He was one of the founders of the Sundance Film Festival. A tribute to his unforgettable role in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, which honored Independent Films and the art of filmmaking. He passed away on September 16, 2025, in Sundance, Utah.

Robert Redford began his career humbly on television and then emerged as somewhat of a Matinee Idol in the 1960s, starring opposite actresses such as Jane Fonda and Natalie Wood. What fans didn’t realize was that Redford starred in plays on Broadway as well. In 1969, working with the likes of Paul Newman, he rose to Superstar Status in the Western “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” and starred with Newman again in the Oscar-winning film “The Sting.”

My favorite moments on the screen with Robert Redford were in such important films as “The Candidate,” “All the President’s Men,” and “The Milagro Beanfield War.’ He was a champion of the Environment, of helping young actors, and was even honored with a National Medal of Freedom. When Redford was on the screen, you knew the film would be amazing, and in “The Way We Were,” opposite Barbara Streisand, you could not help but be fixated on the screen. The film was featured in this year’s Plaza Classic Film Festival, and of course, the song, “Memories,” will be with us forever. Music in his films was always memorable, including “Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head,” and “The Entertainer,” from “The Sting.”

I had the wonderful opportunity to talk with him via satellite in his later years. His voice was the same, the charm was overwhelming, and it was more than just talking to a superstar. He generally cared about his work and, more importantly, others.

Was he the last of the Movie Stars? I don’t know – I hope not. I hope the future stars look up to him and remember his talents, his commitment, and his genuine approach to the arts, as well as his humility.
