KTSM News – Canutillo ISD interim superintendent on campus renovations

Posted on September 22, 2025

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Canutillo Independent School District has been doing renovations at several of its campuses, and Reyes Elementary School is next in line.

The renovations are part of a larger $387 million bond that was approved by voters in the district in 2024. It is the largest per-capita school infrastructure program ever approved in El Paso County, according to the district.

This project funds safety and security enhancements, heating and cooling upgrades, structural and aesthetic improvements, career and technical education classroom upgrades, and technology improvements throughout the district.

On Wednesday, Sept. 24, Canutillo ISD will celebrate the start of $2 million in renovations at Reyes Elementary, 7440 Northern Pass Dr.

“Bond 2024 will touch every corner of the district, including our newest school, Reyes Elementary,” Interim Superintendent Jesica Arellano said. “Although the campus is modern, some issues have surfaced that require the investment of our community. We are happy to give this school the maintenance it needs to remain a high-functioning campus.”

The planned renovations at Reyes Elementary will include:

  • Safety and security projects such as the installation of door access technology, new cameras and fire alarm systems
  • Wireless connectivity upgrades to give classrooms better access to wi-fi for instructional needs
  • Improvements to the existing heating and cooling system
  • Wireless communication upgrades to enhance class-by-class communication and accessibility
  • Installation of interactive boards, helping teachers transform learning

All work at Reyes Elementary is expected to be completed within a year, according to the district.

“The project is being managed on behalf of the district by PROCEDEO. GA Architecture is the architect for the renovations, and Banes General Contractors is the general contractor,” read the news release by Canutillo ISD.

As we previously reported, Canutillo ISD started a total of $16.4 million in renovations at Canutillo High School, which is expected to be completed in about 12 months.

“In particular, Canutillo High School was built in 2006. So, we typically want our buildings to last 50 years. So, we’re in it for the long haul; it’s a state-of-the-art facility,” Arellano added.
