According to a press release, watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector San Diego received a report of a suspicious 36-foot sailboat heading into Mission Bay around 11:15 a.m. A boarding team was dispatched and conducted a landslide boarding of the vessel shortly after it arrived.
Once onboard, officials discovered six individuals, including four people who identified as Mexican nationals — three adults and one unaccompanied minor. The remaining two people, both U.S. citizens, claimed to be the owners of the vessel.
All six individuals were taken into custody by another Department of Homeland Security agency. The vessel was seized as part of the ongoing investigation.
The Coast Guard has not released the names of those detained, and it’s unclear at this time whether the U.S. citizens involved will face human smuggling-related charges. No injuries were reported during the operation.
