EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The El Paso Independent School District confirmed it is investigating the death of one of its students in an incident last week.
The district said it is investigating what happened leading up to the death of 14-year-old Austin High School student Joseph Nathanial Caraballo.

Caraballo was struck and killed by an SUV after running across U.S. 54 on Sept. 23, according to El Paso Police.
“The district is conducting a comprehensive investigation and is addressing this matter with the utmost seriousness and diligence. Ensuring the safety and security of all students and staff remains the district’s highest priority,” the school district said.
The district gave no other details about the investigation and did not say who would be conducting it.
KTSM talked to the mother of Carabello, Evette Ortiz, who said her son had the most severe form of autism which caused him to want to flee from designated safe areas.
She told KTSM that her son had fled from his high school three times since school started in August.
The family said it wants answers from the school and the school district.
KTSM also obtained video showing the moments leading up to the crash. A witness said at the time that the incident involved a juvenile who appeared to be chased on the freeway.
