KTSM News – Man charged with arson after Lower Valley apartment fire kills dog

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A 38-year-old man was arrested after an apartment complex caught on fire, resulting in the death of a dog in El Paso’s Lower Valley.

As KTSM previously reported, shortly before 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 2, crews with the El Paso Fire Department were dispatched to a Condition 2 fire at the Marmolejo Apartments at 600 N. Carolina.

No firefighters were injured, but one dog died in the fire.


Dog dies in Lower Valley apartment fire, no other injuries reported

According to the news release by the El Paso Fire, a joint investigation was conducted by the El Paso Fire Marshal’s Office and the El Paso Police Department’s Mission Valley Regional Command Center, which led to the arrest of 38-year-old Manuel Cardona.

Cardona was arrested on the following charges, according to El Paso Fire:

  • Assault on a public servant
  • Resisting arrest, search and transport
  • Harassment of public servant

On Friday, Oct. 3, Cardona was rebooked at the El Paso County Detention Facility on an additional charge of arson of habitation (first-degree felon) by the Fire Marshal’s Office, with no bond.
