Border Report – Mexican activists detained in Israel coming home

Posted on October 6, 2025

EL PASO, Texas (Border Report) – The Mexican government says Israel has authorized the repatriation of six activists detained while trying to deliver aid to Palestinians.

The six were part of the Sumud flotilla intercepted by the Israeli military some 70 miles off the coast of Gaza on Oct. 1. The three men and three women from Mexico late Monday remained jailed at Ketziot prison in the Negev desert in southern Israel.

“The Mexican ambassador in Israel today made a new consular visit to the Mexican persons jailed in Ketziot. Information was shared with them about their repatriation to Mexico, which has been authorized by the Israeli government and will take place in coordination with our embassies in the region,” the Foreign Ministry said Monday on X.

Officials said they have maintained constant contact with the families of the activists and will ensure they safely return to their country once released. A precise timeframe for their release has not been announced.

The ministry made a reference to providing medication for the detainees, which raised questions in Mexico City about their treatment.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum clarified during her daily news conference that the medications were for preexisting conditions. She implied their release was imminent.

“Yes, there is,” she said when asked if a release date had been set. “We are waiting for the final (negotiations) with the government of Israel and then we will release the information.”
