EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The 80th Anniversary Trinity Test Observance and Open House scheduled for later this month has been canceled, White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) announced on Thursday, Oct. 9.
It’s where Los Alamos scientists tested the world’s first atomic bomb in the southern New Mexico desert in July 1945.
The event that was scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 18. would have allowed visitors access to ground zero where scientists put together the plutonium core of the bomb. The movie “Oppenheimer” portrayed the life of scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer who created the the first atomic bomb.
The cancellation comes in the wake of the federal government shutdown, which has now entered its second week, after Congress was unable to come up with a spending plan.
In addition, WSMR announced on Facebook that the following services will remain open and available during the shutdown:
- Emergency services: Fire, police, & physical security
- Child and Youth Services programs
- Family & Morale, Welfare, and Recreation programs
- Army & Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES/PX)
- Commissary
- Family Advocacy Program (FAP) under Army Community Service
