Border Report – Baja governor announces pending divorce during news conference

Posted on October 9, 2025

SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — Baja California Gov. Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda made her pending divorce public during a news conference with this week.

Rumors had been circulating for months about a split with husband, Carlos Alberto Torres. They have been married for six years and have two children.

“We are in divorce proceedings,” the governor said. “I respect Carlos very much, he’s a great man and father. We are going through this process with mutual respect and affection.”

Ávila Olmeda said she would like privacy for herself and family as they deal with the divorce.

“I would like to thank you, members of the media, for discretion in this very personal issue, which is true.”

Torres was working as a non-paid consultant to the state on infrastructure and roadway projects when he resigned on June 3 after it became public that the U.S. State Department had rescinded his travel visa.

Publications such as Zeta in Tijuana, have reported Torres is under investigation in the U.S. and Mexico for money laundering and connections to organized crime, something he has denied repeatedly.

As part of the investigations, Ávila Olmeda also lost her U.S. travel visa and is not allowed to go north of the border.

Neither the governor nor her husband have been indicted, arrested or charged with any wrongdoing either in the United States or Mexico.

Ávila Olmeda has been Baja California’s top government official since 2021.
