Border Report – Border Report Live: Sheinbaum enjoys popularity after first year in office

Posted on October 9, 2025

EL PASO, Texas (Border Report) — Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum recently completed her first year in office, and she celebrated by going on tour.

Sheinbaum visited every state to tout some of the social programs that her administration has adopted or continued in the past year.

During her stop in the border city of Juarez, in the state of Chihuahua, Sheinbaum declared that under her and her predecessor’s administrations, 13.5 million fewer Mexicans are living in poverty.

She did not, however, address cartel violence or other public safety issues.

In this episode of Border Report Live, El Paso correspondent Julian Resensdiz and Adam Isacson break down Sheinbaum’s first year in office. Isacson is the director of the Defense Oversight program for the Washington Office on Latin America.

Isacson noted that even though crime is still high, Mexico has actually seen a drop in homicides and the trafficking of fentanyl under Sheinbaum.

There are other Mexican policies that Isacson says are concerning, including Sheinbaum’s continued use of the military for domestic issues and her push for the election of judges, which he says politicizes the judiciary.

Still, Sheinbaum remains popular in her country.
