EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The City of El Paso is moving forward with its national search for a new director of Animal Services.
The City is also making plans to to get input from residents as part of the selection process.
The City of El Paso’s Animal Services Director Terry Kebschull has retired. Kebschull had been with the City for 30 years, including guiding the Animal Services Department since March 2022.
His last day in office was Sept. 12 but he utilized accrued vacation time to conclude his employment with the City on Oct. 3.
Candidate interviews are targeted for early January 2026, allowing time to accommodate out-of-town applicants during the holiday season, the City said.
“As we search for the next leader of Animal Services, it is essential that the voices of our community help guide this process,” City Manager Dionne Mack said. “Community feedback will inform our priorities and ensure we identify a director who can advance animal welfare services in ways that matter most to El Paso residents.”
The City will expand engagement to include:
- Community Survey: Launching at the end of the month, the survey will ask residents to share the top priorities they believe the new director should focus on during their first 100 days. Responses will help shape the department’s strategic direction and inform the selection process.
- Animal Shelter Advisory Committee (ASAC): Members of the ASAC will be asked to participate in candidate interviews, using insights from the community survey to guide interview questions and candidate evaluations.
“These steps strengthen the City’s commitment to transparency and ensure that the next director of Animal Services is prepared to build on community priorities and expectations,” the City said in a news release.
