SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — Mexico’s National Bank, Banxico, and the country’s treasury are taking 20-peso notes featuring president Benito Juárez out of circulation, a move that began last week.
Banxico says it is simply “retiring the note.”
The public can still use the bills as they will retain their value, it’s just banks will no longer distribute them, which will make the notes fade away eventually.
No specific reason was given for the decision to remove the Benito Juárez 20-peso notes from circulation.
Banxico says it’s normal to discontinue specific bills, that many others have also been retired previously.
