KTSM News – DASO: Wanted person barricades themselves in Las Cruces apartment complex, dies in fire

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — One person, who was wanted on multiple felony warrants, was found dead after barricading themselves inside an apartment complex that caught on fire in Las Cruces, according to the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office (DASO).

Deputies were dispatched Thursday evening, Oct. 16, to an apartment complex located along the 900 block of Telshor Boulevard in an attempt to make contact with the individual.

The individual, who has not been identified, was wanted on multiple felony warrants, according to DASO.

The individual refused to exit the apartment and barricaded themself inside. During the standoff, a fire was reported inside the apartment complex, and all units were evacuated.

The Las Cruces Fire Department was dispatched to the scene and worked to extinguish the fire. Despite dousing efforts, the individual was found inside the building and pronounced dead at the scene.

According to DASO, no other injuries have been reported at this time.

The Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident and will remain on scene. The public is asked to avoid the area to allow law enforcement and emergency crews to continue the investigation.
