KTSM News – 6 Ysleta ISD marching bands qualify for Area competition

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Six Ysleta Independent School District high-school marching bands are in contention for a UIL state championship, with each earning a Division I “Superior” rating at Saturday, Oct. 18’s regional contest.

They will all advance to the Area round of competition in 4A, 5A and 6A over the next two weeks.

Earning Division I ratings at the Oct. 18 UIL regional contests were Ysleta High (Class 4A), Bel Air, Del Valle, Hanks and Parkland high schools (Class 5A) and Eastwood High (Class 6A).

In Class 4A, Riverside earned a Division II rating of “excellent” for its show “Clear for Takeoff.”

Below are the upcoming Class 4A, 5A, and 6A UIL Area competitions for Ysleta ISD marching bands:

Saturday, Oct. 25 – Class 4A Area competition in Abilene, Texas

  • Led by Drum Major Abril Chavarria and Flag Captains Brizia Enriquez, Isabella Mendez, Faith Leblancis and Luis Castaneda, the Ysleta High School Indian Marching Band will perform the show, “From Manhattan to the Mountains: A Journey Home,” under the direction of Daniel A. Colunga, Raul Morales, Gabriel Gonzalez, and Flag Directors Stephanie Solis-Mata and Denise Rodriguez.

Saturday, Oct. 25 – Class 6A Area competition at the SISD Athletic Complex

  • Led by Drum Majors Brandyn Sandoval, Julian Monsivais, Anjelina Mendoza, Ramiro Burciaga IV, and Guard Captains Dmitri Molina and Trang Pham, the Eastwood High School Trooper Marching Band will perform the show, “Manta Ray,” under the direction of Benjamin Perez, Robert Hayden, John Oman, Art Avila, and Guard Directors Paula Esparza and Karyme Olivarez.

Saturday, Nov. 1 – Class 5A Area competition in Andrews, Texas

  • Led by Drum Majors Jacqueline Lopez, Alan Chavira, and Flag Captains Mei Ling Hiller-Calzada, Isaac Barraza and Ariel Sifuentes, the Bel Air High School Big Red Pride Marching Band will perform the show, “4 of A Kind,” under the direction of Adam Castaneda, Gabby Tellez, Christian Brown, and Flag Directors Kaylee Chavez, Juancarlos Benitez, and Shekinah Velasquez.
  • Led by Drum Majors Julian Gruber, Antonio Morales, and Flag Captain Belissa Ibarra, the Del Valle High School Marching Band will perform the show, “Nightshade Serenade,” under the direction of Keith Morales, Diego Calderon, Shawn Morales, and Flag Director Ashley Aparicio.
  • Led by Drum Majors Lily Arias, Kaitlyn Hernandez, Sophia Ledesma, and Flag Captains Makade DeArmond, Zaita Ramirez, Addelyn Regalado, and Jazlin Garcia, the Hanks High School Silver Knight Marching Band will perform the show, “Suits,” under the direction of James Cordova, Luis Ibarra, Calvin Edwards, and Flag Director Kristal Nazario.
  • Led by Drum Majors Aurora Shindo, Kristalyn Chenausky, and Flag Captain Kathryn Villagrana, the Parkland High School Matador Marching Band will perform “Trainlapse” under the direction of Homer Pardo, Jonathan Reyes, Kody Jones, and Flag Directors Gaby Cardenas, Jorge Puga, and Piper Corona.
