KTSM News – Star on the Mountain glows red for Red Ribbon Week, promoting drug-free living

Posted on October 23, 2025

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Star on the Mountain will shine bright red, honoring Red Ribbon Week, the national campaign promoting drug-free lifestyles, the El Paso Chamber announced in a news release.

Red Ribbon Week, which runs from October 23-31, raises awareness of the dangers of drug use and highlights the importance of making safe and healthy choices.

The campaign began in honor of Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Special Agent Enrique S. “Kiki” Camarena, who was tragically killed by drug traffickers in 1985, according to the chamber.

Following his death, citizens in his hometown of Calexico, California, began wearing red ribbons to commemorate his sacrifice and raise awareness about drug prevention, the chamber added.

In 1988, the National Family Partnership established the first official Red Ribbon Week.

“By turning the Star red, the El Paso Chamber joins organizations nationwide in this visible stand against drug use, encouraging our community to remain vigilant and proactive in building a safer, stronger El Paso,” read the news release.
