El Paso Matters – El Paso-Juárez 10K run postponed; latest victim of government shutdown

Posted on November 8, 2025

The 7th Run Internacional U.S.-Mexico 10K, a unique race run in El Paso and Ciudad Juárez, has been postponed, the second signature El Paso event to fall victim to the ongoing government shutdown.

“We were aware of the government shutdown and wanted to wait as long as possible before making this decision. However, at this point, we must think about all the runners traveling from out of town and everyone involved in planning and organizing this special binational event,” race organizers said in a Friday statement to participants.

“This decision deeply saddens us. Unfortunately, this situation is not in our hands. Several key government agencies that make this unique binational race possible are currently without adequate staff to help us provide support,” the statement said.

The 10-kilometer international run, organized by the El Paso Community Foundation, was scheduled for Nov. 15. No new date has been announced. The thousands of runners who registered can opt to keep their spot for the rescheduled race or receive a refund.

The Amigo Airsho, scheduled for Oct. 18-19 at Biggs Army Airfield, was canceled by Army officials because of the government shutdown, which began Oct. 1.

Congress has been unable to agree on a temporary extension of the fiscal year 2025 government funding budget, which ended Sept. 30.

The government shutdown, the longest in the nation’s history, is creating increasing turmoil.

Millions of people who receive assistance from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, face deep uncertainty as courts determine whether the Trump administration should use emergency funds to pay the November SNAP benefits. More than one in five El Paso households receive SNAP assistance.

The Trump administration ordered airlines to scale back the number of flights leaving and arriving at 40 major airports, citing a shortage of air traffic controllers, who have been working without pay since the shutdown began.

Flights at El Paso International Airport have not yet been affected by cancellations, according to the FlightAware tracking service, but people making connecting flights to and from El Paso at major airports are seeing disruptions.
