KTSM News – State funding to help connect sections of the Paso del Norte Trail

Posted on December 4, 2023

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – More than $345 million will be directed for new sidewalks, bikeways, and other types of infrastructure to help improve safety and enhance the quality of life in Texas communities, the Texas Transportation Commission announced.

Over 83 projects across Texas will be supported with this funding, including two projects along the 68-mile Paso del Norte Trail for more than $26 million.

El Paso County will receive $10,116,918 for the Alamo Alto segment of the Paso del Norte to construct more than 4.8 miles of shared path along Alameda Avenue from Grace Street in Fabens to Farm Road 1109 in the community of Tornillo, parallel to IH 20.

The City of Socorro will receive $16,174,505 for the Socorro Active Transportation Network to construct three new Paso del Norte Trail spur segments from Winn Road to Glorietta Road, completing seven miles of shared-use paths and sidewalks, signal upgrades, pedestrian crossings, signage, and pavement markings, according to the Texas Transportation Commission.

“We are so grateful to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) for this significant investment, which will add additional miles to the Paso del Norte Trail,” said Tracy J. Yellen, CEO, Paso del Norte Health Foundation and Paso del Norte Community Foundation. “We look forward to partnering with the TxDOT on this project to bring these important recreational and alternative transportation amenities to our community – making it easier for the residents of our region to live active lives.”

With these projects, the Paso del Norte Trail has nearly 20 miles of trail completed, with another 28 miles funded for design and/or construction – including nearly all trail segments in the Mission Valley from Ascarate Park to Tornillo. Together, the City of El Paso, the County of El Paso, TxDOT, El Paso Metropolitan Planning Organization, Paso del Norte Health Foundation, and the City of Socorro have provided/secured over $45.9M for the design and construction since 2019.
