El Paso Matters – Photos: El Paso Matters Book Club immersed in author Yasmín Ramírez’s memoir, ‘¡Ándale, Prieta!’

Posted on December 6, 2023

About 30 El Paso Matters Book Club members gathered in a cozy corner of the El Paso Public Library Richard Burges Branch last week for an intimate conversation with author Yasmín Ramírez.

Ramírez shared personal details about her creative process and the sometimes difficult task of crafting her memoir, “¡Ándale, Prieta!” The author openly discussed her hesitation to address certain aspects of her personal narrative, including the challenging chapters about her relationship with her father.

Minerva Laveaga Luna, district-wide Coordinator of English at El Paso Community College, moderated the discussion. Attendees shared their personal connections with the book, including one attendee who shared his appreciation for the songs mentioned in the memoir and the accompanying playlist.

A heartwarming moment unfolded as a mother attended the event with her daughter. She shared how reading the book together not only brought them closer but also served as a bridge to connect with her other daughter living in Austin.

The Nov. 29 event was the final El Paso Matters Book Club gathering of the year. Stay tuned and sign up for our book club newsletter to be the first to learn which book we’ll be reading next.
