El Paso Matters – Voting hours at El Paso County polling sites extended to 8 p.m. after glitch

Posted on March 3, 2026

All polling locations in El Paso County will remain open an additional hour following technical problems that slowed voting during Tuesday’s primary elections, a district court judge ordered.

Judge Lyda Ness Garcia of the 383rd District Court granted a temporary injunction extending voting hours from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at all county vote centers.

Under the order, voters who were already in line before 7 p.m. will be allowed to cast a regular ballot. Voters who were not in line by 7 p.m. will be permitted to vote by provisional ballot until 8 p.m.

Provisional ballots are allowed in situations where either eligibility or circumstances, including arriving after a scheduled closing time, would otherwise keep someone from voting. In this case, provisional ballots are allowed after 7 p.m. due to a court order.

The ruling came after reports of equipment malfunctions and delays at some polling locations earlier in the day.

Earlier in the day, tablets used to check in voters at the polls were malfunctioning, though voting machines were operating correctly, El Paso County Elections Department officials said.

Early voting results, typically released when polls close, will now be released at 8 p.m.
