Courtney Boutte nearly died in 2019. Temperatures soared over 100 degrees while he was coaching his son’s football team at Pearland’s Shadow Creek High School, south of Houston. His wife, Tia, was in the stands and saw him collapse. “I damn near flatlined and checked out,” Courtney told me, but paramedics revived him with a defibrillator and rushed him to the hospital. The fall caused a spinal injury that required two years of rehab to fully overcome, but he wasn’t paralyzed, and he was alive. “I thank God that I can have this conversation,” he said.At the time, he was a truck driver.
