University Medical Center is creating a new position of hospital chief executive officer, a significant administrative restructuring for El Paso County’s public hospital.

Maria Zampini, who has been UMC’s chief operating officer since 2013, was appointed Thursday to the newly created role of chief executive officer of the UMC hospital campus in South-Central El Paso. The appointment was announced in a memo to UMC staff by Jacob Cintron, the president and CEO of the El Paso County Hospital District, which oversees UMC, El Paso Children’s Hospital, several health clinics and El Paso Health, a nonprofit health insurance provider.
“Over the past several years, we have made significant progress expanding access to care, strengthening quality, and advancing our mission to serve our community. With continued growth, we are taking an important step to ensure that we are positioned for long-term success,” Cintron said in the memo, which was provided to El Paso Matters by a source who asked not to be identified because they weren’t authorized to publicly discuss the information.
The memo said Zampini would report directly to Cintron. He said the creation of a hospital CEO aligns with the hospital district’s organization model. Cindy Stout and Carol Smallwood are CEOs of Children’s Hospital and El Paso Health, respectively.
Cintron’s memo said Zampini’s “education, experience, commitment to our mission, strategic insight, and operational knowledge make her well-positioned to lead UMC Hospital into its next phase of growth.”
Zampini and Cintron didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment from El Paso Matters.
According to her LinkedIn profile, Zampini has worked at UMC since 2005. She has a bachelor’s degree in business administration and management and a master’s in business administration from the University of Texas at El Paso.
