El Paso Matters – New EPWater tool helps residents save water and lower bills

Posted on April 21, 2026

In the Chihuahuan Desert, water conservation is part of everyday life. For decades, El Pasoans have played an important role in helping the region stretch its water resources through smart water use and thoughtful planning.

El Paso Water continues to build on a legacy by providing tools, incentives and education that help customers use water more efficiently. One of the newest tools available is the EPWater Home Water Use Calculator, an interactive online resource that helps residents estimate how much water their household uses and identifies opportunities to conserve.

The calculator allows customers to enter information about their home, landscaping, appliances and daily habits to generate a personalized estimate of water use. With this information, residents can see where most of their water goes and learn practical steps to reduce usage and save money.

Understanding where your water goes

Many households are surprised by how much water is used outdoors. During the summer months, up to 40 percent of residential water use can go toward outdoor irrigation.

Small changes can make a big difference. Watering early in the morning, checking for leaks in irrigation systems and choosing drought-tolerant plants can help reduce outdoor water use.

Indoor habits also matter. Running full loads of laundry and dishes, fixing leaks promptly and installing high-efficiency fixtures are simple steps that can save thousands of gallons of water each year.

The Home Water Use Calculator helps residents understand these everyday uses and identify which changes could have the biggest impact.

Rebates that help residents upgrade

To make water-efficient upgrades more affordable, El Paso Water offers several rebate programs designed to help residents reduce water use and save money.

These programs include rebates for installing:

  • High-efficiency toilets, which use significantly less water per flush than older models
  • Energy Star certified washing machines, which use less water and energy per load
  • Smart irrigation controllers that adjust watering schedules based on weather conditions
  • Rainwater harvesting systems that capture runoff for landscape irrigation
  • Laundry-to-landscape systems that reuse washing machine water for outdoor watering
  • Pool covers and efficient pool filters that help reduce evaporation

These upgrades not only help conserve water but can also lead to meaningful savings on monthly water bills.

Helping businesses save water, too

Water conservation extends beyond homes. El Paso Water’s Water Conservation staff works with local businesses large and small using individualized assessments that identify water-saving opportunities and provide rebates for efficiency improvements.

Through theWaterWise Business Rebate Program, commercial customers can receive rebates to help offset the cost of water-saving equipment and upgrades that reduce water use while lowering operating expenses.

A community effort

El Paso has long been recognized as a national leader in water supply planning. El Paso Water’s strategy combines innovative water supply projects, including desalination and water reuse, with strong community participation in conservation.

That participation continues to play a vital role in ensuring sustainable water future for the region.

Tools like the Home Water Use Calculator, along with rebates and conservation programs, help make it easier for residents to take part.

By understanding how water is used at home and making small changes, El Pasoans can help protect a vital resource while saving money along the way. Learn more about conservation programs and rebates at: www.epwater.org
