Kermés season has returned to the Borderland, bringing with it the familiar sights, sounds and aromas that have long marked a tradition in El Paso.
During the next three months, churches throughout the Diocese of El Paso will host dozens of kermeses — annual bazaars that blend faith, food and fellowship into weekends of celebration. The events welcome thousands of visitors each year with homemade favorites such as gorditas, enchiladas, tacos, elote and raspas, alongside live music, folklórico performances, carnival rides, games and raffles.
Behind the festivities is months of planning by parish staff and volunteers. The events also serve as important fundraisers, with proceeds supporting church ministries, religious education, facility improvements and other parish programs throughout the year.
The kermeses ramp up in August and continue through October, offering nearly every weekend an opportunity to experience one of the Borderland’s most enduring community traditions.
