Initially City staff had proposed a tax rate of $0.783 per $100 of valuation, which would have resulted in an increase of $105 for the average-valued El Paso single-family home ($232,669 for FY 2027).
But yesterday our City Council voted 5-3 to adopt the rollover tax rate of $0.809 per $100 of valuation, the highest rate permitted by law without seeking voter approval.
Reps. Acevedo, Maldonado-Rocha, Boyar-Trejo, Fierro, and Canales voted in favor of the tax increase, while Reps. Chavez, Nino and Limon voted against it.
Adam Powell of the El Paso Times published an excellent report on yesterday’s vote with a thorough explanation for the primary drivers of the proposed tax increase.
The final vote to adopt a budget and tax rate for FY 2027 will occur on Tuesday, August 18.
Renard Johnson campaigned hard on lowering our property tax but is now presiding over the second tax increase in a row.
