Border Report – 1.7 million sex-change operations performed in Mexico last year

Posted on August 2, 2024

SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — Demand for gender reassignment surgeries are on the rise south of the border, according to Arturo Ramirez Montañana, president of the International Society of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery.

“It’s a market that has seen incredible growth in Mexico in recent years,” has said, adding that surgeries for transgender people are being done for both men and women as well as body sculpting and facial procedures.

According to Ramirez, the process for gender reassignment is a complex and intricate process involving psychological and psychiatric counseling along with hormonal treatments before the actual sex-change surgeries can be done.

Ramirez points out that over the last eight to 10 years, demand for this medical work has increased worldwide.

“We have a lot of counterparts doing these types of procedures trying to keep up with demand in the current marketplace,” Ramirez said. “Mexico has seen a growth in this field, but not as great when compared to plastic or cosmetic surgeries such as liposuction and breast augmentation.”
