Border Report – 1 person in custody following explosion, pursuit in Deming

Posted on January 23, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — One person has been taken into custody in connection with an explosion at a government building Monday, Jan. 21 in Deming, New Mexico.

New Mexico State Police reported on their Facebook page that an explosion happened in front of the Luna County Magistrate Courthouse and the Adult Probation and Parole Building located at 912 S. Silver in Deming.

At about 7:30 a.m. Monday, Deming Police responded to reports of a possible explosion.

Upon arrival, officers found what was called a “suspicious object/device” near the entrance of the building, according to a news release sent out by the Deming Police Department.

Officers set up a security perimeter and evacuated people from the surrounding neighborhood, according to Deming Police officials. No injuries were reported in the incident.

New Mexico State Police’s Bomb Squad was called to the scene to investigate. Surveillance footage was also obtained from a nearby building and a vehicle description for a possible suspect was obtained.

At about noon, officers located the “vehicle of interest” and a pursuit ensued, Deming Police said.

The pursuit ended on Interstate 10 near Exit 82. The highway was closed in both directions for several hours as a result. The highway has since reopened in both directions.

New Mexico State Police took the driver into custody. The driver has not been identified.

The area around the Adult Probation Office is still closed. People are being asked to avoid the area.

New Mexico State Police say the investigation has been turned over to the FBI.
