Border Report – $134M upgrade at Otay Mesa Port of Entry is done

Posted on January 26, 2024

SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — The U.S. General Services Administration announced Thursday morning it has completed a $134 million modernization and expansion project at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry.

Otay Mesa processes over $13.5 billion in exports and $37.4 billion in imports every year, while inspecting nearly 1 million commercial trucks.

According to GSA, the Otay Mesa Port of Entry also processes 2.1 million pedestrians, and 5 million privately owned vehicles annually.

It says the modernization project provides the port with “adequate operational space, reduces traffic congestion, and creates a safer environment for port employees and commercial vehicles.”

“We are excited to deliver this modernized facility,” said Sukhee Kang, regional administrator for GSA’s Pacific Rim Region. “In addition to the number of pedestrian inspection booths, the project significantly improves efficiency of inspection areas, processing flows, and the overall travel experience.”

Kang stated the port of entry had become outdated since it opened 40 years ago.

“Investing in the infrastructure and modernization of land ports of entry is not just pivotal, but imperative for America’s economic growth, national border security, and efficient cross-border transportation,” said Kang.

According to a news release issued by the GSA, the project also included the construction of a new commercial annex building, increased the number of commercial inspection booths from nine to 16, and built a visitor parking lot and an employee parking structure.
