Border Report – 4 Tijuana intersections among Mexico’s most dangerous, safety group says

Posted on August 16, 2024

SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — Four intersections in the city of Tijuana are among Mexico’s 50-most dangerous intersections, according to Mexico City-based public safety watch dog Strategy Mission Zero.

The group surveyed street crossings in Mexico’s biggest cities and determined four intersections in Tijuana are among the country’s most perilous.

The survey was based on the total number of crashes and deaths per capita involving people in the crashes.

The area where Avenida Aldrete and Avenida Negrete intersect in downtown Tijuana was described as the most dangerous in the city.

The same study showed crashes at this intersection were up by 71.2% from just six years ago and most were speed-related.

Ivonne Hernández, of Strategy Mission Zero, reports the number of deaths resulting from traffic crashes in Mexico was 3.4 per every 100,000 residents in 2023, while the number in Tijuana was higher at 4.3 fatalities per 100,000 inhabitants.

“These are lessons,” she said. “Most of these result in legal proceedings and other consequences, not to mention the negative impacts on families.”

She also said Tijuana, on average, has an insufficient number of police units patrolling the city failing to crack down on speeders.

“Speed kills whether you’re on an electric cycle on the sidewalk or in a car on the street,” she said. “We’re always in a hurry to get somewhere, too much roadway violence is going on.”
