EL PASO, Texas (Border Report) – An American teen attempted to smuggle nearly half a million fentanyl pills across the border on Jan. 12, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said.
The 19-year-old U.S. citizen arrived in a pickup at the Douglas (Arizona) Port of Entry, where he was ordered to undergo a more comprehensive search.
Border officers said they found 500 packages of blue pills that tested positive for fentanyl hidden in a compartment in the bed of the pickup.
In all, the young man had 492,000 pills of fentanyl, weighing just under 123 pounds.
The port director applauded what he called “continued layered enforcement actions.”
“Our officers are keeping deadly drugs off our streets,” said Martin Gomez, the Douglas area port director.
