Border Report – Agents save siblings on brink of dehydration on remote Otay Mountain trail

Posted on August 12, 2025

SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — San Diego Sector Border Patrol agents assigned to the Brown Field Station rescued a brother and sister who were on the brink of dehydration last week.

According to a Border Patrol news release, agents first encountered an unaccompanied 16-year-old Mexican male attempting to enter the U.S. illegally through the remote Otay Mountain Wilderness Area east of the Otay Mesa Port of Entry.

The young man was said to be exhibiting signs of severe dehydration, so agents requested emergency medical services transporting the teen boy by ambulance to a nearby hospital for care.

While receiving treatment, he reportedly informed agents that he had left his 12-year-old sister on the trail they were following and that she was also extremely dehydrated and could no longer walk.

A CBP Air and Marine helicopter was deployed to the area along with Border Patrol Search, Trauma, and Rescue agents.

After a search, agents located the girl in distress.

She was conscious and stable as she was airlifted from the wilderness area to a waiting ambulance that took her to a nearby hospital for emergency care.

“Our agents are not only trained law enforcement professionals, but also first responders,” said San Diego Sector Acting Chief Patrol Agent Jeffrey D. Stalnaker, “This event demonstrates the steadfast dedication of our agents in protecting our country while also preserving human life.”
