EL PASO, Texas (Border Report) – Authorities in Juarez, Mexico, have handed over to the U.S. government an American citizen allegedly wanted on drug and murder conspiracy charges.
Mexican National Migration Institute (INM) agents late Tuesday brought Jaime Renteria Fernandez, 31, to an international bridge linking Juarez and El Paso and turned him over to Homeland Security Investigations and U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials.
HSI officials described Renteria as a “drug trafficker and cartel enforcer directly implicated in multiple homicides” in the Albuquerque, New Mexico, area.
A federal official said HSI agents attached to the U.S. diplomatic mission in Mexico helped local authorities track down the fugitive. An organized crime police unit in the state of Chihuahua apprehended Renteria and INM agents expelled him from Mexico, the source said.
Renteria was to make an initial appearance in U.S. District Court on Wednesday on various federal charges.
