McALLEN, Texas (Border Report) — The bomb squad was called Thursday to help a Border Patrol agent in Laredo, Texas, after ammo was discharging inside his vehicle, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer told Border Report.
The incident happened Thursday morning near Mines Road, which runs parallel to the Rio Grande in Laredo, CBP spokeswoman Sara Melendez said.
“After a Border Patrol agent assigned to the Laredo Sector was working his assigned duties, returning from firearms qualifications when he heard ammo discharging inside his government issued unit. The agent proceeded to park his unit at a local gas station located at the Mines Road area. Laredo Police Department bomb squad and Laredo Fire Department arrived at the scene to assess the situation and contain the loose ammunition that had detonated inside the agent’s bag,” Melendez said.
The public was alerted to avoid the Murphy Express gas station at Mines Road and Killam Industrial Boulevard until the incident was contained.
It’s unclear if heat might have played a factor. Although the temperature in Laredo reached near 100 degrees on Thursday afternoon, it was only about 84 degrees at the time of the event, according to the National Weather Service.
Melendez says the matter remains under review by CBP and did not indicate there were any injuries.
