Border Report – Attack on Tijuana children’s center aimed at individual, not facility, Baja AG says

Posted on January 19, 2024

SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — The Epic Adventure Park in Tijuana offers trampolines, ball pits and other attractions for children, and it was filled with families last Sunday evening when two gunmen sprayed the outside of the center with machine gun fire.

The two assailants fled the area and remain at large.

María Elena Andrade Ramírez, Baja California’s Attorney General stated the initial investigation shows the attack was meant as a message for two people inside and not the owners of the facility.

Andrade Ramírez said ballistic tests showed the bullets used in this attack came from guns that have been used in other crimes around the city.

“Our investigation is ongoing so we don’t have a lot of information we can make public, but we do have surveillance camera video, witness accounts and more evidence to lead us to the assailants,” said Andrade Ramírez. “The attack was aimed at members of a crime organization who were inside at the time. It was not an extortion attempt on the business.”

While she said this was not an act of extortion, the attorney general said there has been a sharp increase in the number of businesses that are being asked to pay a fee to avoid violence or damage.

“The number has shot up, in an extraordinary way,” said Andrade Ramírez.
