SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — The body of a third Mexican National Guard member who disappeared in the ocean last week was located Thursday morning, but four more have yet to be recovered.
Initially, seven were declared missing during a training exercise in the water near Ensenada about 65 miles south of the border.
At the time, a high-surf warning was in effect, but the men were ordered into the surf with the rest of their unit.
Witnesses say a big wave swept them out to sea.
At first, 11 were unaccounted for, but four did manage to get out of the water.
The Mexican Navy, Coast Guard, lifeguards and the military launched a search for the other seven and have continued looking ever since.
So far, three of the missing soldiers have been found including the one from this morning.
The discovery was confirmed by Baja California Gov. Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda.
She said a helicopter spotted the body floating in the water.
The governor was asked if the victims had been forced to go into the water, but she declined to comment saying the military would have that information.
So far, Mexico’s National Guard has refused to say anything about the missing soldiers or what they may have been doing in the ocean.
Family members have been critical and have expressed frustration over the lack of information related to the incident.
According to relatives, their loved ones were cadets who were going to graduate on Saturday from the National Guard Academy.
