SAN ANTONIO, Texas (ValleyCentral) — More than a dozen bishops from Catholic dioceses along the Texas-Mexico border met in San Antonio this week to discuss the status of migrants and refugees.
The central focus of their meeting was to discuss migrants and refugees which they state have taken new relevance with a new federal administration in the United States and Mexico.
“We want to make it clear that the Catholic church has always been a reliable partner to our governments, of our peoples and especially of all those in need,” said Bishop Mark J. Seitz of the Catholic Diocese of El Paso.
Daniel E. Flores, bishop of the Diocese of Brownsville, was also in attendance along with Bishop Eugenio Lira Rugarcia of Matamoros.
“For decades we have expressed our concern that in the United States we have a broken immigration system which does not correspond to the present reality. We hope and strongly urge our political leaders to fulfill their duty to reform it,” Seitz said.
The bishops emphasized that the church stays committed to announcing the gospel for migrants.
Gustavo García-Siller, bishop of the Diocese in San Antonio, also touched on the situation with Pope Francis. He stated that the pope sent a letter to all bishops asking them to continue to support migrants and refugees.
