Border Report – Border Report Live: Fight over redistricting underway in El Paso

Posted on October 7, 2025

EL PASO, Texas (Border Report) — El Paso has become the epicenter of a political fight that has major implications in the 2026 midterm elections.

Two powerful Latino organizations, including the League of United Latin American Citizens, or LULAC, are inside a federal courthouse in El Paso challenging newly drawn congressional district maps by the Texas Legislature, which they say dilute minority voting power and are unlawful.

Efforts to redraw the district were made at the request of President Trump, and the end result could determine whether Republicans maintain their hold on power in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The State of Texas denies any discriminatory or racially motivated intent behind the maps.

On the other hand, the Department of Justice also accused Texas of crafting “coalition districts” in the past by grouping certain demographics together, alleging those districts are illegal.

In this episode of Border Report Live, correspondent Julian Resendiz outlines some of the arguments being made by both sides, as the hearing continues this week in Downtown El Paso.
