Border Report – Close to half of gas stations in Tijuana closed due to gasoline shortage

Posted on May 24, 2024

SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — Almost half of the gas stations in the Tijuana area are closed due to a gasoline shortage in the region, according to Carlos Roberto Rubio Arreola, president of Gas Station Owners Association in Baja California.

“Out of 278 gas station, we have 123 stations that are totally closed in Tijuana, Tecate and Rosarito. Others have a very limited supply of premium unleaded and diesel,” said Rubio Arreola.

Rubio Arreola is pleading with the public not make “panic purchases.”

He says stations with gasoline are limiting sales to 500 pesos or about $30.

“This will give others a chance to buy gasoline,” he said.

The shortage is due to a group of residents performing a blockade of a refinery in Rosarito, an action that began last Sunday.

The facility is on the coast, about 25 miles south of the border.

They are blocking all access to the facility demanding the state of Baja California issue them title and full ownership to lands where they have built their homes.

For now, the state has indicated it is not ready to give into demands being made by those taking part in the blockade.

But the residents have promised to continue with their barricade of the refinery in Rosarito until they get what they want.
