SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — Two weeks ago, the state of California opened the main roadway that takes visitors to Border Field State Park, which sits on a bluff above the Pacific Ocean, an area famous for its views — where the border barrier runs into the water.
For years, and for various reasons, this roadway has been inaccessible by car.
The only way to get in and out has been on foot, bike or horse.
“It is a beautiful the area, you can see the whole view of the ocean, I love to come here and enjoy nature,” said Maria Fernandez two weeks ago when the roadway was about to open.
Fernandez, who says she’s a frequent visitor to the area, said the state opening the road was long overdue.
Since the road is only open on weekends, it’s creating a lot of confusion as to when the public can actually drive on it.
According to the California State Parks website, the park is open seven days a week from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. After Labor Day, closing time will be 6 p.m.
But if you want to drive in, cars are only allowed on Saturdays and Sundays with a $5 fee.
It’s free to walk or bike in, provided cars are parked on a dirt lot at the gate.
Border Field State Park is also well known as the home of Friendship Park, which is located between the two border barriers.
This is where residents from both countries could meet and interact in person with the border fence between them.
It has been closed since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Border Patrol, which controlled and supervised access, has been non-committal as to when it might reopen it.
As of now it remains off limits, the public is asked not to get near the border barriers.
