EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Renard Johnson and Brian Kennedy are heading to a runoff to decide who will be El Paso’s next mayor.
Johnson, a political newcomer and business owner, leads with 59,627 votes or 32.48 percent. Brian Kennedy, a City Council member for District 1, is second with 44,459 or 24.22 percent, according to final unofficial results released at about 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 6.
Six other candidates had 10 percent or less.
Cassandra Hernandez is in a distant third at 18,985 votes or 10.34 percent. Other candidates are: Steven B. Winters, 15,803 or 8.61 percent; Isabel Salcido, 13,598 or 7.41 percent; Marco Antonio Contreras with 11,915 votes or 6.49 percent; Elizabeth Cordova, 10,757 votes or 5.86 percent; and Ben Mendoza, with 8,454 votes or 4.60 percent.
Also on the ballot, the City of El Paso is asking voters for the authority to cancel the remaining $128.45 million in general obligation bonds that were initially approved for a multipurpose performing arts and entertainment facility in Downtown El Paso.
The measure to axe the Downtown arena won a huge victory for opponents of this controversial project.
“Yes” means getting rid of the project and that won with 97,463 votes or 55.54 percent, while “no” trailed with 78,032 or 44.46 percent.
