SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — A large crack on a Tijuana street is now spreading underground and is affecting 44 homes, prompting city officials to red-tag them.
This is on top of more than 90 homes that were declared uninhabitable in recent weeks.
It’s happening in Colonia Lomas Conjunto Residencial on the south side of Tijuana about 10 miles from the border.
“This crack has been moving to the north on a hillside and is damaging more homes,” said Miguel Ángel Ceballos, director of Tijuana’s Civil Protection. “This is very risky, we’re asking residents to leave the area, this crack is more than 9 feet deep in some areas.”
Residents blame a slow response in repairing a water leak that was discovered under the main street where a large sinkhole eventually developed.
Ceballos said 52 of the houses are a total loss and some have already tilted and have wobbled into a canyon.
Many others have developed cracks in walls, foundations and ceilings.
Last week, one resident told Border Report he would not leave his home of 44 years and was prepared to stay “until the end.”
Tijuana’s Civil Protection has stated it can’t force residents to leave. It also said crews will continue to monitor the situation.
