EL PASO, Texas (Border Report) – Merchants in downtown Juarez, Mexico, are planning a “family oriented” spring break event on March 22 with food trucks, live music and sidewalk sales.
The 4 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday festival will lead to the closure of Avenida Juarez from Mejia to Azucenas streets. That means motorists heading to the Paso del Norte International Bridge will have to take a detour at Avenida Villa along railroad tracks to reach the El Paso port of entry.
“We had an event Dec. 7 called ‘Juarez en la Juarez’ and more than 4,000 people came. We want more events to bring more tourism to Avenida Juarez so that people see the beauty of our city,” said Juarez Economic Director Tania Maldonado.
The merchants will set up about a dozen mini-stages for the musicians and city officials won’t enforce alcohol open-container ordinances in the four-block area of the festival, she said.
Mariachi bands have been hired to go in and out of restaurants all along the avenue; mural artists will be performing their craft on the surface of the street.
“We will have food trucks so people can enjoy and bring their family,” Maldonado said.
