SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — United States Marines have been in San Diego for two weeks and continue to install and hang concertina wire on the border barrier.
Most of their efforts have been in the Otay Mesa area southeast of downtown San Diego.
The wire is being placed on the U.S. side of the border fence as a preventive measure to keep migrants from climbing over and then down the barrier.
According to the Department of Defense, some of the Marines in San Diego are from the 1st Marine Division based at Camp Pendleton, California.
Others are from the 7th Engineer Support Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group, also from Camp Pendleton.
They are part of a group of 1,500 active-duty personnel from the U.S. Army and the U.S. Marine Corps deployed to the southern border to “augment approximately 2,500 service members already deployed in support of Customs and Border Protection.”
According to the Department of Defense, the exact number of personnel will fluctuate as units rotate and as additional forces are deployed once planning efforts are finalized.
